Ingredients

  • about 450 g Ground beef
  • 30 Betel leaves
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 Shallots, minced
  • 2 tbsp Lemongrass, minced
  • 2 tbsp Fish sauce (or soy sauce)
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper
  • 12 Rice paper wrappers
  • 1/2 cup Fresh mint
  • 1/2 cup Fresh cilantro
  • 1 head Lettuce
  • 1/2 cup Nước chấm dipping sauce

Original measure retained: its cup/spoon or fluid-volume standard is unspecified.

Instructions

  1. 1In a medium bowl, combine the about 450 g ground beef, 2 cloves minced garlic, 2 minced shallots, 2 tbsp minced lemongrass, 2 tbsp fish sauce (or soy sauce), 1 tsp sugar, and 1/2 tsp black pepper. Mix everything together thoroughly with your hands until well combined.
  2. 2Take one of the 30 betel leaves and place about 1 tablespoon of the beef mixture in the center of the leaf.
  3. 3Fold the betel leaf around the beef mixture to create a small parcel. If the leaf is not staying closed, you can secure it with a toothpick.
  4. 4Preheat your grill to medium heat, which is approximately 175°C.
  5. 5Place the betel leaf-wrapped beef parcels onto the grill. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes on each side, for a total of 10 to 14 minutes. The beef is cooked through when it is no longer pink inside and reaches an internal temperature of 71°C.
  6. 6Arrange the 12 rice paper wrappers, 1/2 cup fresh mint, 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, and 1 head of lettuce on a platter for serving.
  7. 7Serve the grilled Bò Lá Lốt immediately with the prepared platter and the 1/2 cup nước chấm dipping sauce. To eat, take a rice paper wrapper, add some fresh herbs and lettuce, place a grilled beef roll on top, wrap it all up, and dip into the nước chấm sauce.
