Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Safe Plated.

What is Safe Plated?

Safe Plated is a meal planning tool that uses AI to generate weekly meal plans and recipes with allergen-aware ingredient substitutions. We analyze what job each ingredient does in a recipe (binding, aeration, fat richness, etc.) and find substitutes that perform the same role.

Is Safe Plated a medical tool?

No. Safe Plated generates recipe concepts and suggestions. It is not a medical device, and should not replace advice from your allergist, doctor, or dietitian. You must always verify all physical ingredients and labels yourself.

How does the substitution system work?

Instead of simple 1:1 swaps, Safe Plated identifies what role each ingredient plays in a recipe — for example, eggs provide 'binding' in baked goods. We then find a substitute that serves that same function (like flax eggs for binding). This produces better-tasting results than generic substitution.

Which allergens does Safe Plated cover?

We cover the 9 major allergens: dairy, egg, tree nuts, peanut, wheat/gluten, soy, shellfish, fish, and sesame. You select which ones apply to your household during onboarding.

How much does it cost?

You can start using Safe Plated for free — no credit card required. The free plan includes 1 meal plan per month (7-day), 3 label scans, and up to 10 pantry items. For unlimited access to all features, plans start at $12.99/month or $109.99/year ($9.17/month). You can cancel anytime with no commitments. We use Stripe for secure payment processing.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. You can cancel your subscription at any time from the billing portal. You'll continue to have access until the end of your current billing period.

What is the 'My Watchlist' feature?

My Watchlist is your personal notebook for tracking products you've checked. You can mark products as safe, caution, or unsafe and add your own notes. This data is private to you — we don't verify products on your behalf.

How do I contact support?

If you have a question not answered here, email us at support@safeplated.com. We aim to respond within 48 hours.

Why do some recipes show a confidence score?

Our AI generates recipes and then a separate, independent AI reviews them for allergen awareness. The confidence score reflects how thoroughly the review passed. Scores above 70 are published; below that, recipes are regenerated. This is an additional check, not a safety guarantee — always verify ingredients yourself.

How is this different from prompting free AI?

Safe Plated builds your full allergen profile once and applies it to every recipe. It cross-checks recipes against known allergen aliases (like casein for dairy, or lecithin for soy), remembers your preferences across sessions, and provides tools like label scanning, safety cards, and shopping lists. A free AI prompt starts from scratch every time and has no persistent safety net.

Is my family's data shared with the AI? Could it end up in training data?

We use the Google Gemini API (a commercial Cloud API, not the consumer chatbot) to generate recipes and plans. Your allergen profile, household member names, and dietary preferences are sent to generate personalised results — but Google is contractually prohibited from using your inputs or outputs to train, improve, or develop their AI models. This is governed by Google's Cloud Data Processing Addendum. Your data is processed in real time and is not retained by Google after the response is returned.

What exactly is sent to the AI when I generate a plan or use the chat?

We send your allergen list (with severity), household member names and age groups, dietary preferences, food dislikes, and your specific request (e.g., "generate a meal plan" or a chat question). We never send your email, password, payment details, or full account data. Each request is isolated — the AI has no memory between sessions and does not carry context from other users.

Where do the recipes come from and will they taste good?

Recipes are AI-generated using established cooking techniques and independently audited for safety. Substitutions are chosen based on what role each ingredient plays in the recipe — binding, aeration, richness — so the recipe works as a whole, not just with something removed.
