Egyptian Cheese Sambousek
Crispy, savory pastries filled with a blend of cheeses and herbs, a popular snack or appetizer in Egypt. They are baked, not fried, for a healthier twist.
Ingredients
- 8 sheets Filo pastry sheets
- 1/2 cup Feta cheese
- 1/2 cup Ricotta cheese
- 1/4 cup Mozzarella cheese
- 2 tbsp Fresh parsley
- 1 tbsp Fresh mint
- 1 large Egg
- 2 tbsp Olive oil
Instructions
- 1Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- 2In a medium bowl, combine the 1/2 cup Feta cheese, 1/2 cup Ricotta cheese, 1/4 cup Mozzarella cheese, 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, and 1 tablespoon Fresh mint. Mix these ingredients together until they are well combined.
- 3Lay out one sheet of the 8 sheets Filo pastry sheets. Lightly brush the entire surface of the filo sheet with some of the 2 tablespoons Olive oil.
- 4Place another sheet of Filo pastry directly on top of the oiled sheet. Brush this second sheet with more of the 2 tablespoons Olive oil. Repeat this process until you have a stack of 4 oiled filo sheets.
- 5Cut the stacked filo sheets lengthwise into strips that are about 2 inches wide.
- 6Place about 1 tablespoon of the cheese mixture at one end of each 2-inch wide filo strip. Fold the end of the strip over the filling to create a triangle shape. Continue folding the strip along its length, maintaining the triangle shape, until you reach the end of the strip.
- 7Repeat steps 3 through 6 with the remaining 4 sheets of Filo pastry and the rest of the cheese mixture.
- 8Arrange the formed sambousek in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- 9In a small bowl, whisk the 1 large Egg. Brush the whisked egg evenly over the tops of all the sambousek.
- 10Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the sambousek are golden brown and appear crispy.
- 11Allow the sambousek to cool slightly on the baking sheet for a few minutes before serving them warm.
