Ingredients

  • 1 cup Red Lentils
  • 6 cups Water
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Powder
  • 2 tablespoons Ghee (or vegetable oil)
  • 2 cloves Garlic
  • 2.54 cm Ginger
  • 1/2 medium Onion
  • 1 medium Tomato
  • 2 tablespoons Cilantro
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 cups Basmati Rice

Original measure retained: its cup/spoon or fluid-volume standard is unspecified.

Instructions

  1. 1Rinse the 1 cup of Red Lentils under cold running water until the water runs clear. This removes any dust or debris.
  2. 2In a large heavy-bottomed pot, combine the rinsed 1 cup of Red Lentils, 6 cups of Water, 1 teaspoon of Turmeric Powder, and 1 teaspoon of Cumin Powder. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over high heat, then immediately reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 25-30 minutes, or until the lentils are very soft and starting to break down. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  3. 3While the lentils are simmering, prepare the tadka (tempering). Peel and finely mince the 2 cloves of Garlic. Peel and finely mince the 2.54 cm of Ginger. Peel and finely chop the 1/2 medium Onion. Finely chop the 1 medium Tomato. Measure out the 2 tablespoons of Ghee (or vegetable oil).
  4. 4Place a medium saucepan over medium heat (around 176.7°C or 175°C). Add the 2 tablespoons of Ghee (or vegetable oil) to the pan. Once the ghee is melted and shimmering, add the minced garlic, minced ginger, and chopped onion. Sauté, stirring frequently, for 5-7 minutes, or until the onions are translucent and the mixture is a light golden brown. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
  5. 5Add the chopped tomato to the saucepan with the onions, garlic, and ginger. Cook for another 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes have softened and started to break down.
  6. 6Carefully pour the entire contents of the saucepan (the tadka) into the large pot with the simmering lentils. Stir everything together well to combine.
  7. 7Add the 1 teaspoon of Salt to the lentil soup. Stir again, then let the soup simmer gently, uncovered, for an additional 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Stir in the 2 tablespoons of chopped Cilantro just before serving.
  8. 8While the dal is finishing, cook the 2 cups of Basmati Rice according to your preferred method until fluffy and cooked through. Ensure the rice is prepared separately from the lentil soup.
  9. 9Serve the hot Dal Bhat immediately. Ladle the lentil soup into bowls and serve alongside the cooked basmati rice. A side of vegetable curry can be added if desired.
