Ingredients

  • 2 cups Sweet sticky rice (glutinous rice)
  • 1/2 cup Black beans
  • 1 can Coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp Salt

Original measure retained: its cup/spoon or fluid-volume standard is unspecified.

Instructions

  1. 1Place the 2 cups of sweet sticky rice in a large bowl and cover it completely with water. In a separate bowl, place the 1/2 cup of black beans and cover them completely with water. Allow both the rice and beans to soak for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  2. 2After the soaking period, carefully drain all the water from the 2 cups of sticky rice and the 1/2 cup of black beans.
  3. 3In a large mixing bowl, combine the drained 2 cups of sticky rice, the drained 1/2 cup of black beans, the 1 can of coconut milk, the 1/4 cup of sugar, and the 1/4 tsp of salt. Stir all the ingredients thoroughly until they are evenly mixed.
  4. 4Pour the entire rice mixture into a heat-proof bowl or a steamer basket that fits inside your steamer. Fill the bottom of your steamer with water and bring it to a rolling boil over high heat (100°C / 100°C).
  5. 5Carefully place the bowl or steamer basket containing the rice mixture into the steamer, ensuring it is above the boiling water. Cover the steamer tightly and steam for 45-50 minutes, or until the rice appears translucent, is very sticky, and feels tender when tasted.
  6. 6Once cooked, carefully remove the steamed sticky rice from the steamer. Let it cool slightly for 5-10 minutes before serving; this brief cooling period helps the texture set and become perfectly sticky.
