Ingredients

  • 1 cup Red lentils
  • 2 cups Water
  • 2 tablespoons Berbere spice blend
  • 1/2 medium Onion
  • 2 cloves Garlic
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt

Instructions

  1. 1Rinse the red lentils thoroughly.
  2. 2In a pot, combine lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes, or until lentils are soft and most of the water is absorbed.
  3. 3While lentils are cooking, finely chop the onion and garlic.
  4. 4Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the onion and garlic until softened, about 5 minutes.
  5. 5Add the berbere spice blend to the skillet and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, until fragrant.
  6. 6Add the cooked lentils to the skillet with the spices. Stir well to combine and season with salt.
  7. 7Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens and forms a paste.
  8. 8Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Form the lentil mixture into small bite-sized shapes.
  9. 9Serve warm or at room temperature.
