Soy-Free Sri Lankan Fish Ambul Thiyal (Sour Fish Curry)

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs Firm White Fish (e.g., Tuna, Swordfish)
  • 2 tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 1 large Onion
  • 2-3 each Green Chilies
  • 3 cloves Garlic
  • 1 inch Ginger
  • 4-5 pieces Goraka (Dried Brindle Berry)
  • 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tsp Chili Powder
  • 10 leaves Curry Leaves
  • 1 stick Cinnamon Stick
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 tsp Salt

Instructions

  1. 1Cut the fish into 1-inch cubes.
  2. 2Heat coconut oil in a clay pot or heavy-bottomed pan.
  3. 3Add chopped onion, green chilies, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until fragrant, about 3 minutes.
  4. 4Add goraka, turmeric powder, chili powder, curry leaves, and cinnamon stick.
  5. 5Add the fish pieces and gently stir to coat with the spices.
  6. 6Pour in water, bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low.
  7. 7Cover and cook for 25-30 minutes, or until fish is cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
  8. 8Season with salt to taste. Serve hot with rice.
