Ingredients

  • 2 large Russet potatoes, cut into fries
  • for frying Vegetable oil
  • 8 oz Montreal smoked meat, sliced
  • 3 cups Vegetable broth
  • 2 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp Water
  • 1 tbsp Soy sauce (gluten-free tamari)
  • 2 tbsp Nutritional yeast
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp Onion powder
  • to taste Black pepper

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Rinse the 2 large Russet potatoes and pat them completely dry with paper towels. Cut the potatoes into fry shapes, about 1/2-inch thick. Place the cut potatoes in a large bowl and toss with enough vegetable oil to lightly coat each fry. Spread the fries in a single layer on a baking sheet.
  2. 2Bake the fries for 25-35 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oven and immediately season with black pepper to taste.
  3. 3While the fries are baking, prepare the dairy-free gravy. Pour the 3 cups of vegetable broth into a medium saucepan and bring it to a simmer over medium-high heat, about 375°F (190°C).
  4. 4In a small bowl, whisk together the 2 tablespoons of cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water until smooth, creating a slurry. Once the vegetable broth is simmering, slowly pour the cornstarch slurry into the broth while stirring constantly. Continue to stir until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency, about 2-3 minutes.
  5. 5Stir the 1 tablespoon of soy sauce (or gluten-free tamari), 2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder into the thickened gravy. Let the gravy simmer gently for another 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to combine.
  6. 6Warm the 8 oz of sliced Montreal smoked meat gently in a separate pan over medium-low heat until just heated through, about 3-5 minutes. Do not overcook.
  7. 7To assemble the poutine bites, arrange a portion of the crispy fries on a serving plate. Top the fries with the warmed Montreal smoked meat. Drizzle generously with the prepared dairy-free gravy.
  8. 8Serve the poutine bites immediately while the fries are crisp and the gravy is warm.
