Simit (Turkish Sesame Bread Rings)

A popular Turkish street food, simit are sesame-covered bread rings. They are crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. Perfect for a quick and satisfying breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Instant Yeast
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1.5 cups Warm Water
  • 0.5 cup Molasses
  • 0.5 cup Water
  • 1 cup Sesame Seeds

Instructions

  1. 1In a large bowl, combine flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. 2Add warm water and mix until a dough forms.
  3. 3Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. 4Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. 5Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  6. 6Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal pieces.
  7. 7Roll each piece into a long rope, about 18 inches long.
  8. 8Fold the rope in half and twist the two strands together.
  9. 9Join the ends to form a ring.
  10. 10In a shallow bowl, mix molasses and water.
  11. 11Dip each ring into the molasses mixture, then coat thoroughly with sesame seeds.
  12. 12Place the simit on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  13. 13Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  14. 14Let cool slightly before serving.
