Mieliepap (Cornmeal Porridge) with Chakalaka (Spicy Relish)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Coarse Cornmeal
  • 4 cups Water
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 can Canned Baked Beans
  • 1 can Diced Tomatoes
  • 1/2 medium Onion
  • 1/2 medium Green Bell Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Chili Powder
  • 2 cloves Garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon Curry Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil

Instructions

  1. 1For the mieliepap, bring the water and salt to a boil in a medium saucepan.
  2. 2Gradually whisk in the cornmeal, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
  3. 3Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 20-30 minutes, or until the mieliepap is thick and creamy.
  4. 4For the chakalaka, heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  5. 5Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper and cook until softened.
  6. 6Add the minced garlic, chili powder, and curry powder. Cook for 1 minute.
  7. 7Stir in the canned baked beans and diced tomatoes. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
  8. 8Serve the mieliepap hot with the chakalaka on top.
