Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons Yerba Mate
  • 4 cups Water
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1Place a medium saucepan on the stove. Pour the 4 cups of Water into the saucepan. Turn the heat to medium-high and bring the water to a simmer, which means small bubbles will begin to rise from the bottom of the pan, indicating a temperature of approximately 212°F (100°C).
  2. 2Once the water is simmering, carefully add the 4 tablespoons of Yerba Mate to the hot water.
  3. 3Allow the Yerba Mate to steep in the hot water for 5 to 7 minutes. During this time, the water will turn a deep amber color, and a distinct aroma will develop.
  4. 4Position a fine-mesh strainer over a heatproof pitcher or directly over your serving cups. Gently pour the entire Yerba Mate mixture through the strainer to separate and remove the Yerba Mate leaves.
  5. 5If you are using the 2 tablespoons of Sugar, measure it into the strained liquid. Stir continuously until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  6. 6Serve the Mate Cocido hot immediately.
