Ingredients

  • 3 cups Flour
  • 3 tsp Baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 1.5 cups Water
  • 0.5 cup Vegetable oil
  • 0.25 cup Golden syrup

Instructions

  1. 1In a large bowl, whisk together the 3 cups of flour, 3 teaspoons of baking powder, and 0.5 teaspoon of salt.
  2. 2Gradually pour in the 1.5 cups of water while mixing with your hands or a spoon until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
  3. 3Lightly dust a clean, flat surface with a little extra flour from your measured amount. Turn the dough out onto this surface and gently knead for 2-3 minutes until it is smooth.
  4. 4Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball.
  5. 5Pour the 0.5 cup of vegetable oil into a large frying pan. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  6. 6Gently flatten each dough ball into a round disc, about 1/2-inch thick. Carefully place one or two dough discs into the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan.
  7. 7Fry the dough for 2-3 minutes on each side, until it puffs up and turns a deep golden brown. You will see bubbles forming on the surface as it cooks.
  8. 8Using tongs, carefully remove the fried bread from the oil and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
  9. 9Serve the Maori Fried Bread warm, drizzled with the 0.25 cup of golden syrup.
