Ingredients

  • 1.5 lb Ground Beef
  • 4 cups Cooked White Rice
  • 4 Eggs
  • 2 cups Beef Broth
  • 2 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • 1/2 cup Onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper

Instructions

  1. 1In a medium bowl, combine the 1.5 lb ground beef with the 1 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp black pepper. Gently mix with your hands until just combined, then divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form each into a patty, about 1-inch thick.
  2. 2Heat the 2 tbsp olive oil in a large (10-12 inch) skillet over medium-high heat, aiming for about 400°F (200°C). Carefully place the 4 hamburger patties into the hot skillet and cook for 5 to 7 minutes per side, until a meat thermometer inserted into the center of a patty reads 160°F (71°C) and the patties are browned on both sides. Remove the cooked patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.
  3. 3In a separate medium (8-inch) skillet, heat over medium heat, aiming for about 350°F (175°C). Carefully crack and fry the 4 eggs, one at a time or as space allows, until the whites are fully set and the yolks are cooked to your desired consistency, typically 2-3 minutes for runny yolks or 4-5 minutes for firm yolks. Set the fried eggs aside.
  4. 4Using the same large skillet where the patties were cooked (do not clean it, the drippings add flavor), reduce the heat to medium, aiming for about 350°F (175°C). Add the 1/2 cup chopped onion and 2 cloves minced garlic to the skillet and sauté, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 5 minutes, until the onions are softened and translucent.
  5. 5Pour the 2 cups beef broth into the skillet with the softened onions and garlic. Bring the broth to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low, aiming for about 200°F (95°C), and let it simmer for 2 minutes.
  6. 6In a small bowl, whisk together the 2 tbsp cornstarch and 1/4 cup water until the mixture is completely smooth and lump-free, creating a slurry. Slowly pour this cornstarch slurry into the simmering beef broth in the skillet, stirring constantly with a whisk or spoon, until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency, which usually takes about 1 to 2 minutes.
  7. 7To assemble each serving, place one-quarter of the 4 cups cooked white rice (about 1 cup) into each of 4 separate bowls. Top the rice in each bowl with one of the cooked hamburger patties, followed by one of the fried eggs. Generously spoon the thickened gravy over the patty and egg in each bowl. Serve immediately.
