Ingredients

  • 4 Tuna steaks
  • 3 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 medium Onion (diced)
  • 2 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 28 oz Canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp Erythritol
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper

Instructions

  1. 1Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a medium (approximately 10-inch) skillet over medium heat (approximately 300-325°F / 150-160°C). Add the 1 medium diced onion and 2 cloves minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion is translucent and softened, and the garlic is fragrant.
  2. 2Add the 28 oz canned crushed tomatoes, 2 tbsp tomato paste, 1 tbsp red wine vinegar, 1 tsp Erythritol, 1 bay leaf, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp black pepper to the skillet with the onion and garlic. Stir all ingredients together well. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low and continue to simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, until the sauce has thickened slightly.
  3. 3While the sauce simmers, heat a separate medium (approximately 10-inch) skillet over medium-high heat (approximately 350-375°F / 175-190°C) for 2-3 minutes. Add the remaining 1 tbsp olive oil to the hot skillet and let it shimmer for about 30 seconds.
  4. 4Pat the 4 tuna steaks dry with paper towels. Season both sides of each tuna steak with salt and black pepper. Carefully place the seasoned 4 tuna steaks into the hot skillet and sear for 2-3 minutes per side for medium-rare doneness; the exterior should be nicely browned, and the interior should be warm pink. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of a steak should read 125°F (52°C) for medium-rare.
  5. 5Carefully remove the seared 4 tuna steaks from the skillet and place them on a plate or cutting board. Let them rest for 2-3 minutes; this allows the juices to redistribute, keeping the tuna moist. Remove and discard the 1 bay leaf from the tomato sauce. Serve the rested tuna steaks immediately, topped with the warm Portuguese tomato sauce.
