Ingredients

  • 1 medium head Green Cabbage
  • 1 cup Dried Yellow Split Peas
  • 6 cups Water
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 3 cloves Garlic
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 1 tablespoon Smoked Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Caraway Seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Marjoram
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black Pepper

Instructions

  1. 1Rinse the split peas and soak them in water for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight.
  2. 2Drain the soaked peas and add them to a large pot with 6 cups of fresh water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 45 minutes, or until the peas are tender.
  3. 3While the peas are cooking, shred the cabbage. Dice the onion and mince the garlic.
  4. 4Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  5. 5Add the shredded cabbage to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until it wilts down, about 10-15 minutes.
  6. 6Transfer the cooked cabbage to the pot with the peas. Add the smoked paprika, caraway seeds, marjoram, salt, and pepper.
  7. 7Stir everything together and simmer for another 30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Add more water if needed to maintain desired consistency.
  8. 8Serve hot.
