Ethiopian Chickpea Stew (Shiro) Breakfast Bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Chickpea Flour
  • 3 cups Water
  • 1 medium Red Onion
  • 4 cloves Garlic
  • 2 tablespoons Berbere Spice Blend
  • 3 tablespoons Niter Kibbeh (Spiced Clarified Butter)
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato Paste
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 4 pieces Injera Bread

Instructions

  1. 1Heat Niter Kibbeh in a pot over medium heat.
  2. 2Add red onion and garlic and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. 3Stir in tomato paste and berbere spice blend and cook for 1 minute.
  4. 4Gradually add chickpea flour, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
  5. 5Slowly pour in water, stirring constantly, and bring to a simmer.
  6. 6Reduce heat to low and simmer for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the stew has thickened.
  7. 7Season with salt to taste.
  8. 8Serve hot in bowls with a side of injera bread.
