Egyptian Hawawshi (Dairy-Free)

A popular Egyptian street food consisting of pita bread filled with spiced ground meat and baked to crispy perfection. This version is adapted to be dairy-free.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground Lamb
  • 1 medium Red Onion
  • 1 medium Green Bell Pepper
  • 1 medium Tomato
  • 3 cloves Garlic
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon Coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon Paprika
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 4 pieces Pita Bread

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. 2In a large bowl, combine the ground lamb, finely diced red onion, green bell pepper, tomato, and minced garlic.
  3. 3Add cumin, coriander, paprika, olive oil, salt, and black pepper to the mixture. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
  4. 4Cut each pita bread in half to create pockets.
  5. 5Stuff each pita pocket with the ground meat mixture, spreading it evenly.
  6. 6Brush the outside of the pita bread with olive oil.
  7. 7Place the stuffed pita breads on a baking sheet.
  8. 8Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pita bread is crispy and the meat is cooked through.
  9. 9Let cool slightly before serving.
