Dutch 'Oliebollen' (Dairy-Free Donuts)

Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp Active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 1/4 cups Plant-based milk (almond or soy)
  • 2 tbsp Plant-based butter, melted
  • 1 each Egg
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup Raisins
  • 1/2 cup Currants
  • 1/2 cup Apple, diced
  • 4 cups Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 0 Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. 1In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. 2In a separate bowl, whisk together plant-based milk, melted plant-based butter, egg, and vanilla extract.
  3. 3Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. 4Stir in raisins, currants, and diced apple.
  5. 5Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. 6Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  7. 7Using two spoons, scoop out a portion of dough and carefully drop it into the hot oil.
  8. 8Fry the oliebollen for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  9. 9Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  10. 10Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
