Classic Dutch Bitterballen made completely dairy and nut-free using ground beef and plant-based butter, served with mustard. These are deep-fried for a crispy exterior and tender interior.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 1 cup Vegetable broth
  • 0.5 cup All-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons Plant-based butter
  • 0.5 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs (check label for allergens)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 3 cups Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. 1In a saucepan, melt plant-based butter over medium heat. Sauté onion until softened.
  2. 2Add flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  3. 3Gradually whisk in vegetable broth until smooth. Bring to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  4. 4Stir in ground beef, mustard, salt, and pepper. Cook until beef is browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
  5. 5Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Stir in the egg.
  6. 6Form the mixture into small balls. Roll each ball in breadcrumbs.
  7. 7Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  8. 8Fry the bitterballen in batches until golden brown and cooked through, about 3-4 minutes.
  9. 9Serve hot with extra mustard.
