Dairy-Free Zopf Bread with Apple Butter

A vegan version of the traditional Swiss braided bread, served with homemade apple butter. Perfect for a weekend breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 1/2 cups Non-Dairy Milk (almond or soy)
  • 1/4 cup Vegan Butter, melted
  • 1 jar Apple Butter

Instructions

  1. 1In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. 2In a separate bowl, heat non-dairy milk to lukewarm. Add melted vegan butter.
  3. 3Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  4. 4Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. 5Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. 6Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal parts. Roll each part into a long strand.
  7. 7Braid the three strands together and tuck the ends underneath.
  8. 8Place the braided bread on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. 9Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until golden brown.
  10. 10Serve warm with apple butter.
