Dairy-Free Hungarian Poppy Seed Roll (Mákos Rétes) Bites

Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp Active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 cup Warm water
  • 1/4 cup Sunflower oil
  • 1 cup Poppy seeds
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp Lemon zest
  • 2 tbsp Plant-based milk

Instructions

  1. 1In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, 1/4 cup sugar, and salt.
  2. 2Add warm water and sunflower oil. Mix to form a soft dough.
  3. 3Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  4. 4Grind poppy seeds finely using a spice grinder or mortar and pestle.
  5. 5In a saucepan, combine ground poppy seeds, 1/2 cup sugar, lemon zest, and plant-based milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.
  6. 6Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. 7Roll out dough into a thin rectangle.
  8. 8Spread poppy seed filling evenly over the dough.
  9. 9Roll up dough tightly and cut into small bite-sized pieces.
  10. 10Place pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  11. 11Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. 12Serve warm.
