Dairy-Free Emirati Harees (Wheat Porridge with Chicken)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Whole wheat berries
  • 1 lb Chicken pieces
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 6 cups Chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp Ghee substitute (coconut oil)
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 0.25 tsp Cinnamon powder

Instructions

  1. 1Soak whole wheat berries in water overnight.
  2. 2In a large pot, combine soaked wheat berries, chicken pieces, chopped onion, and chicken broth.
  3. 3Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 3-4 hours, or until the wheat is very soft and the chicken is falling apart. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  4. 4Remove chicken pieces from the pot. Shred the chicken and return it to the pot.
  5. 5Use a wooden spoon or immersion blender to mash the wheat and chicken mixture into a smooth, porridge-like consistency.
  6. 6Stir in coconut oil, salt, pepper, and cinnamon powder.
  7. 7Cook for another 15-20 minutes, stirring constantly, until the harees reaches the desired consistency.
  8. 8Serve hot, garnished with more ghee substitute (coconut oil) if desired.
