Ingredients

  • 1 cup Red lentils (masoor daal)
  • 1 medium Onion
  • 1 medium Tomatoes
  • 1 tsp Ginger-garlic paste
  • 0.5 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 0.5 tsp Red chili powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 0.5 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable oil
  • 4 cups Water
  • 2 tbsp Fresh cilantro
  • 1 tsp Salt

Instructions

  1. 1Rinse the red lentils in water until the water runs clear.
  2. 2Heat vegetable oil in a pot over medium heat.
  3. 3Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds, let them splutter.
  4. 4Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.
  5. 5Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for another minute.
  6. 6Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, and red chili powder. Cook until tomatoes soften.
  7. 7Add rinsed lentils and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 25-30 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and cooked through.
  8. 8Season with salt and garnish with fresh cilantro.
  9. 9Serve hot with rice.
