Dairy-Free Argentine Facturas (Sweet Pastries)

A dairy-free version of Argentine facturas, delicious sweet pastries traditionally enjoyed for breakfast. This recipe uses plant-based butter and milk for a similar taste and texture.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp Instant Yeast
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Plant-Based Milk
  • 1/2 cup Plant-Based Butter
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1/4 cup Apricot Jam
  • 2 tbsp Shredded Coconut
  • 1 tbsp Sugar

Instructions

  1. 1In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. 2In a saucepan, heat the plant-based milk and plant-based butter until the butter is melted. Let cool slightly.
  3. 3Add the dairy-free milk mixture and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. 4Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  5. 5Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. 6Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
  7. 7Shape each piece into your desired factura shape (e.g., medialunas, vigilantes).
  8. 8Place the facturas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  9. 9Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. 10Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  11. 11While still warm, brush the facturas with apricot jam and sprinkle with shredded coconut and sugar.
