Dairy-Free Appel Flap (Apple Turnover)

A Dutch classic, reimagined without dairy or nuts! These apple turnovers use a flaky puff pastry and a spiced apple filling made with coconut oil instead of butter. They deliver a delicious treat perfect with coffee or tea.

Ingredients

  • 1 package Puff pastry (dairy-free)
  • 3 Apples
  • 2 tablespoons Coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup Brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
  • 1 Egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon Turbinado sugar

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. 2Peel, core, and dice the apples. In a saucepan, melt coconut oil over medium heat.
  3. 3Add the diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice to the saucepan. Cook until the apples are softened, about 8-10 minutes.
  4. 4Roll out the puff pastry and cut into squares. Place a spoonful of the apple mixture in the center of each square.
  5. 5Fold the pastry over to form a triangle and crimp the edges with a fork to seal.
  6. 6Brush the tops with egg wash (or plant-based milk) and sprinkle with turbinado sugar.
  7. 7Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
