Ambul Thiyal (Sour Fish Curry Bites)

A dry fish curry with a distinctive sour flavor from goraka (dried gambooge). Serve cooled or at room temp as bite-sized snack.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Tuna (Cubed)
  • 4 pieces Goraka (Dried Gambooge)
  • 1 medium Red Onions (Sliced)
  • 3 whole Green Chilies (Sliced)
  • 15 leaves Curry Leaves
  • 1 2-inch Cinnamon Stick
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Coconut Oil

Instructions

  1. 1Soak the goraka in warm water for about 15 minutes to soften.
  2. 2In a large bowl, combine the tuna with sliced red onions, green chilies, curry leaves, cinnamon stick, turmeric powder, black pepper, and salt.
  3. 3Squeeze the soaked goraka to release its sour flavor and add the liquid to the fish mixture. Discard the goraka.
  4. 4Heat coconut oil in a pot over medium heat. Add the fish mixture and cook, stirring occasionally, until the fish is cooked through and the liquid has evaporated.
  5. 5The curry should be dry and slightly caramelized. Serve at room temperature or chilled.
